3canal: Talk yuh Talk

I have just discovered your website. I must say that your group is the best musical expression to come out of our twin island state and probably the region in contemporary times. I have been so frustrated with our popular music that I stopped coming home for Carnival. But, your music have always stood above the rest. Uniquely trintobagoian and still addressing local and universal themes. I think I met members of your group when they participated in the 1996 olympics in atlanta.
I lecture on the politics of T&T Carnival music at Georgia State University in Atlanta (a guest speaker in my friend's class) and we have never included any of 3canal's music. I think that is about to change, we will be introducing your music to this young north american audience soon. Take good care and continued success.

with all due respect to what was being said. I do believe the gentle knew exactly how to spell J'ouvert bu chose to say it. I would like to think that we (trinidad and tobago) can create our own flavor and away from the colonial powers....who ar e you to say they spell it wrong and to what standard yours? or that is the old english master who told you that.
Brothers continue to be the catalyst for progressive innovative sound in trinidad and tobago

Hi Tom, when we started our Jouvay Band [Jocks tuh Pose] in 1994 we decided to spell it phonetically. The more commonly used "J'ouvert" itself is not "correct" and is a phonetic distillation [creolisation] of Jour Ouvert, and has become accepted into the lexicon. Language is an evolving thing.
Jouvay is a time of inversion, where jocks dressed down in their jocks come out to pose in the road, Trinidad is a place where juxtaposition is the norm, hence Jouvay. We also find it a better aesthetic.

Listen - as a Trini, I have PLENTY respect fuh allyuh - I appreciate what yall doin, the vibes yuh sendin, so I hate to say this to people here, but "Jouvay" is not the correct spellin (in the bio). I enjoyed your provocative production "Shine." I am truly proud to claim that we are of the same soil. Thank you for such inspiration and creativity. My deepest hope is that you come to Washinton DC soon. There is such a desperate need for your presence in our community. Moreover, because your message is so timely and inviviating, I am consedering using some of your material in my sermons...is that OK?
thanks
